I DON’T want to harp on about the past in this WordPress round-up of my recent Facebook posts but I can’t help thinking about the late comedy duo Morecambe and Wise this morning.
If you’re ancient enough, like me, to remember Britain’s national treasures Eric and Ernie, you’re know Eric would often get “little ern” into a stranglehold, exclaiming: “Try and get out of that!”
The joke was, of course, that Eric’s ‘black-belt’ headlock wasn’t a stranglehold at all so Ernie was free to strike back at his comedy partner and incompetent martial arts tormentor.
Okay, I realise this might seem like a rather tortuous analogy but I’m praying for the day when our modern-day dog-eat-dog society will escape the shackles of globalisation and human exploitation.
If you’ve been following my Facebook posts, you’ll see I touch upon this subject by commenting on Tory MP Alison Griffiths’ tribute to local volunteers in Bognor Regis and Littlehampton.
Of course, I don’t want to belittle local volunteering in any way, but – as I say – ordinary families cannot live on thin air alone and I, like Mrs Griffiths, want to champion LOCAL BUSINESS.
Sadly, David Cameron’s Big Society decentralised Big Government by un-democratically handing control to Big Business, unwieldy charities and quasi-local governmental groups and committees.
Sadly, hardly a day goes by nowadays when I don’t hear folk, who, like me, have seen the rights they once took for granted slipping away, saying: “I think it’s too late to do anything about it.”
My question is: “Is it?” Believe it or not, there are glimmers of hope which is why I am pleased to see that Iconic Media has launched the Project 50 local journalism recruitment drive.
Righto, I don’t think I have to go over old ground, but as the Iconic Media‘s advertisement for news reporters, news editors and editors says: “Local Journalism Matters“.
As it says: “For generations, local journalism has informed communities, held power to account, celebrated local success and connected people to the places they call home”.
I’ll let you read the Iconic Media advertisement yourself in my Facebook post above along with my other recent posts embedded here below. I’m not going to comment on them in this blog post, and feel free to respectfully disagree with me if you wish.
Of course, I’m too long in the tooth to apply for a full-time job, but, I hope to see a young(er) news hound serving their patch here on the Manhood Peninsula soon.
