Exploring Ealing Comedies: ‘Passport to Pimlico’ insights

By HILARY GAVIN

I’M NOT sure when I last posted my Facebook news round-up but it must have been almost two weeks ago now so I’m quickly dashing one off today.

As you’ve probably seen I’ve been covering the two parish councils I write articles on for this WordPress blog – namely Hunston and Sidlesham – since my last WordPress round-up so I hope you’ve enjoyed catching up on village news.

If you’ve read my reports and watched the YouTube footage of the parish councils’ latest meetings, you’ll know that a Hunston villager made an impassioned plea for better speed calming measures on the busy B2145 and Sidlesham Parish Council discussed the Peninsula Forum which has apparently added the word “community” into its title that parish councillor Tricia Tull considered “a nonsense“.

On Wednesday last week (May 20th,2026) I attended Sidlesham’s Annual Parish Meeting which was enjoyable and well-attended because I’m happy and glad to report that parishioners take a healthy interest in their rural village life.

As one resident told Wednesday’s meeting Sidlesham is spread out and is “a string of hamlets” rather than one little village so I was interested when a WSCC officer (I’ve got his name in my notes) gave a talk on Community Emergency Hubs.

You can read my Facebook post to get my take on these hubs because I can’t help feeling that WSCC is trying to “reinvent the wheel” by asking Sidlesham villagers to select leaders “from the bottom up” to organise emergency hubs. “What about parish councillors?” I ponder. “Aren’t they accountable to the electorate?”

Anyhow, it’s too nice a May Bank Holiday Monday to get too serious about these matters today which is why I’ve decided to post a trailer of the late 1940s’ Ealing Comedy Passport to Pimlico along with a restored clip from the British caper.

Personally, I love watching the old Ealing Comedies and I should say that Passport to Pimlico sprang to mind when a fellow caravan owner at Seal Bay, Selsey, briefly mentioned the London borough to me during a friendly chat.

Watching the clip has made me want to revisit the old black and white movie in which the good folk of Pimlico realise they’re Burgundians and not British at all – although the formidable late and great comedienne Margaret Rutherford encapsulates the true spirit of old Blighty as the eccentric Professor Hatton-Jones.

So funny, and – I reckon – quite relevant today.
