About me

Hilary Gavin

“If a story is in you,
it has to come out.”

William Faulkner, American writer, 1897 to 1962

Until recently I was an early-retiree journalist who left both the national and regional press thirteen years ago when our industry and work fizzled out.

Over the intervening years I lived quietly in my old family home in Chichester before moving to the Bognor Regis area in the autumn of 2023.

In November 2024, I moved into the village of Hunston where I am now returning to local reporting and feature writing because – quite frankly – I reckon it will be fun to give journalism one last go before I get much older.

As you can see, I brand myself “a grumpy woman” and I admit I can be opinionated and argumentative but I’ve got a good sense of humour too.

At heart, I’m a curious person who is fascinated by people and enjoys telling their stories. Mind you, I’ve got a few interesting real-life tales of my own plus plenty of gripes on living in modern-day Britain which I’m sure others share!

Ultimately, I hope you – as readers of my blog – find my posts enjoyable and informative. Please feel free to give me your honest feedback, good or bad – but don’t expect me to hold back if I disagree with you.

I realise that some of my younger readers might not remember the much-loved late comedienne Caroline Aherne – but I’d like to evoke her alter-ego chat show hostess Mrs Merton here by saying: “Let’s all have a heated debate.”
